How will therapeutic exercise in Etobicoke benefit me?

People believe that resting an injury for a few days or even weeks will resolve their pain and injury, unfortunately, this is not the case. Resting and injury often lead to longer recovery times, potentially worsening your condition or making you more susceptible to incurring another injury.

Simply put, choosing to rest the injury is an ineffective strategy to address the injury and associated pain. The longer you rest, the more your muscles weaken, becoming increasingly tense and restricted. Avoiding activity can also impair your overall function and delay your ability to react and respond to daily challenges.

The good news is that therapeutic exercise at our Etobicoke physiotherapy clinic can help you recover faster and improve your overall function and fitness. Our physiotherapists specialize in movement, they are experts in designing therapeutic exercise programs to improve your strength, range of motion, and overall body function.

Physio In The Six Inc.’s goal is to assist you in living a pain-free life with improved physical performance and health!

Let us create a customized recovery plan for you to complement your recovery and achieve peak levels of function.

Typical therapeutic exercise programs

Your recovery plan will include a variety of therapeutic exercises tailored to your specific condition and its requirements. Whether you have pain, range of motion deficit, weakness, loss of balance, or cardiovascular deficit, therapeutic exercise can and will help.

You might see the following exercises:

Range of motion exercises (passive, active assisted and active):

hese exercises are designed to increase the range of motion of your joints, and improve the mobility and flexibility of your soft tissues.

This can be accomplished through active, passive, or assisted stretching.

Active: An active stretch does not involve the application of an outside force or assistance of any kind. A good example of an active stretch for the hamstring would be bending forward to touch the floor.

Active assisted: An active assisted stretch is when you help yourself (or are helped) to move a limb in order to stretch a muscle. An example would be when you lay on your back and use a to help lift your leg to feel a stretch in your hamstring.

Passive: A stretch performed to you where you do nothing to help. Typically performed by your physiotherapists , a work out partner, a trainer or loved one at home.

These are intended to assist your joints and muscles move more freely and painlessly.

Progressive resistive exercises (aka strengthening exercises):

These exercises are common in physiotherapy and are designed to initiate the recovery of muscles following an injury or surgery. These exercises are used to strengthen our muscles safely and effectively.

The progression of strength initially begins with performing a motion against gravity, and gradually progresses to using weights and increasing loads. Essentially any form of resistance can be used, common ones include bands, dumbbells, barbells, machines, or other weight).

Progressions may also include changing the effect of gravity on a limb, for example lying vs. standing, speed of movement, amount of repetitions and sets. The bottom line is, you must continue to challenge and stress the area to be strengthened to feel the gains.

Balance training:

Balance is your ability to distribute your weight evenly to maintain an upright and steady position. This can be accomplished in a static position (i.e., sitting, standing, kneeling, etc.) or dynamic (i.e., transferring positions, walking, running, etc.).

The nervous and musculoskeletal systems are tested every time you do any activity. Simple activities such as standing up, walking, standing still, brushing your teeth, or preparing a meal all require you to maintain your balance to perform these tasks. If you lose your balance, you lose control over your body and run the risk of injuring yourself.

Balance exercises are critical to your well-being, especially after an injury or illness, and a significant component of your overall ability to function.

Aerobic conditioning:

Aerobic means “with oxygen”. Breathing controls the amount of oxygen supplied to the muscles in order for them to burn fuel and move. Aerobic exercise is considered cardiovascular conditioning or “cardio” workout. Aerobic conditioning exercises are designed to increase your heart rate therefore increasing the oxygen in your blood allowing us to continue exercising.

Therapeutic exercises that help improve your aerobic condition include exercises that elevate your heart rate and sustain it. The most common aerobic exercises include activities like:

  • Brisk walking
  • Hiking
  • Running
  • Swimming
  • Cycling
  • Fitness classes (i.e., step aerobics, Zumba, circuit training)
  • HIIT (i.e., high-intensity interval training)
  • Rock climbing
  • Cross country skiing

Aerobic exercise is a form of therapeutic exercise that depends primarily on the individual’s needs and tolerance to exercise. Our physiotherapists will design the right type of aerobic exercise that meets your needs.

With therapeutic exercise, you can say goodbye to your limitations!
