Dry Needling

Why Do Physiotherapists Use Dry Needling?

Acupuncture is known to facilitate the release of natural painkillers (endorphins) and natural anti-inflammatories resulting in a physiological response. By reducing pain and inflammation and decreasing muscle tone, acupuncture is a modality used to restore proper functional movement patterns.

Research suggests that dry needling is extremely effective in reducing myofascial restrictions resulting in dysfunctional movement patterns of the joints and muscles. It is used to reduce muscle tension and/or tone and is also used as well as a pain management strategy.

Our Etobicoke physiotherapists in Physio In The Six Inc. who implement acupuncture/dry needling are all highly trained, certified, and rostered to perform this activity with the College of Physiotherapists.

Why should I choose dry needling?

There are a variety of musculoskeletal issues that can be treated with dry needling. When dry needling is applied to your muscles and tissues, it can decrease tightness, increase blood flow and reduce local and referred pain. When combined with our advanced manual therapy techniques and therapeutic exercises, we have found our patients quickly achieved the desired pain-free goals they were aiming towards.

After conducting a comprehensive evaluation to assess the nature of your condition, our Etobicoke physiotherapist will let you know if dry needling is the best course of treatment for you. We have used dry needling to treat several diverse conditions, from chronic pain sufferers to athletes experiencing delayed onset muscle soreness.

Will dry needling hurt me?

Most of our patients report feeling little to no discomfort when undergoing dry needling treatments. Our highly-trained physiotherapists know how to make the process as painless as possible; however, some patients may still experience a “twitch response” with the insertion of the needle.

This is comparable to a quick muscle cramp or ache. The 24-48 hours following a dry needling treatment may also result in muscle soreness, which should go away on its own. Sore muscles can be treated at home by applying ice and/or heat packs and drinking plenty of fluids.

SO, HOW DOES IT WORK?

This treatment method is used by our licensed physiotherapists in Etobicoke as a way to relieve pain. When performing dry needling, our physical therapist will insert a sterile needle through the skin, into the underlying tendons, ligaments, or muscles that have been affected, in order to relieve pain, decrease muscle tension, and improve mobility.

While it is a common misconception, dry needling is not acupuncture. It is based on a modern scientific study of musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems. While there are some similarities, dry needling is strictly based on Western medicine principles and research. It provides an environment that enhances the body’s ability to heal, ultimately reducing pain in the process.

What Does Dry Needling Actually Do?

Dry needling sounds intense, but it’s really just a powerful tool for releasing stubborn muscle knots and tension. Using a thin, sterile needle, we target tight areas—called trigger points—that can be causing pain or messing with how your body moves.

It’s different from acupuncture, even though it looks similar. Dry needling is rooted in modern science and physiotherapy, focusing on muscle dysfunction, not energy flow. If you’ve been struggling with back pain, muscle soreness, or sports injuries, this technique can help kickstart healing and improve your range of motion.

Does It Hurt?

Not really—but it can feel a bit weird at first. You might notice a twitch or a quick crampy feeling when the needle hits the right spot. That’s actually a good thing—it means we’ve reached the trigger point.

Afterward, you might feel a bit sore, kind of like you had a deep workout. We’ll guide you on how to ease that soreness, usually with movement, hydration, or a heat pack. Most people feel a release and relief from pain within the first couple of sessions.

How Do I Know if Dry Needling Is Right for Me?

If you’ve tried stretching, massage, or rehab and still feel tension that won’t budge, dry needling might be the missing piece. It’s great for musculoskeletal conditions, sports injuries, and even those frustrating nagging spots that show up after sitting too long.

We’ll always talk things through first—your goals, medical history, and how your body responds to touch. And your physiotherapist will walk you through the process so it’s never a surprise. It’s just one more tool we use to help you feel strong, mobile, and pain-free.
