Do you suffer from chronic pain?
Cupping therapy may provide relief!
Cupping is an ancient treatment started in Chinese and Middle Eastern medicine. People have practiced cupping therapy for thousands of years to ease pain and other ailments. Our practitioners at Physio In The Six Inc. use cupping therapy to treat pain.
This treatment technique is an ancient alternative medicine known as “tissue distraction release.” Cupping involves the placement of round cups directly on the skin in pain and/or tension areas. Ancient Chinese, Egyptian, and Middle Eastern societies first used cupping to relieve pain and reduce inflammation.
If you’d like to try cupping or learn how it can help you relieve pain, request an appointment with Physio In The Six Inc. as soon as possible!
What exactly is cupping therapy?
Have you seen people with circular bruises and wondered where they came from? Cupping involves the placement of round cups directly on the skin where you have pain or tension. The cups are adhered to your body using a negative pressure created by either heat or a pump to create a suction effect. The cups are then left on your skin for several minutes each session.
Our Etobicoke physiotherapists apply cups to your skin during your session for optimal results. The cups create a vacuum-like suction that causes the skin to rise and allows the blood vessels to enlarge. This helps relieve pain and induce relaxation while promoting increased blood flow to reduce inflammation.
Applying cupping to areas of tension and specific points of high irritability (i.e., trigger points) is a way to relieve musculoskeletal pain. Trigger points are thought to trigger local and referred pain and are often the result of trauma or overuse.
The exact mechanism of pain control is still being researched, with the leading theory being explained by Gate Control Theory. The gate control theory is essentially where a non-painful input (cupping) closes the nerve “gates” so the pain is blocked.
During cupping as blood flow increases, nitric oxide levels also increase. Nitric oxide is responsible for muscle relaxation, reduced tension and decreased pain. What an added benefit!
What are the advantages of cupping therapy at our Etobicoke physiotherapy clinic?
This treatment has many benefits.
Cupping effectively treats various conditions, including chronic neck pain, low back pain, fibromyalgia, and other musculoskeletal pain-related conditions. It can also help your skin, relieve respiratory problems, and aid digestion.
Research has demonstrated that it can help relieve pain and increase circulation in the area where the cups are positioned. It is a safe non-invasive treatment. Many feel cupping helps get the ball moving toward recovery.

CUPPING THERAPY ETOBICOKE FAQs
What Does Cupping Therapy Actually Feel Like?
If you’ve ever seen those circular marks on someone’s back and wondered what they’re from—that’s cupping. It might look intense, but most people find it surprisingly relaxing. You’ll feel a gentle pulling or suction sensation as the cups lift the skin, increase circulation, and give your tight muscles room to breathe.
It’s a unique experience, totally different from a massage, but often just as effective at helping the body unwind. Many of our clients say it leaves them feeling lighter, looser, and more energized.
Is Cupping Just a Trend or Does It Really Work?
Cupping has been around for centuries—it’s not just a trend. In fact, it’s rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and used to help with everything from back pain to digestive issues. The suction helps bring blood to areas that need healing, eases tension, and gives your body a chance to reset.
We sometimes use cupping alongside other treatments like acupuncture or massage therapy to boost the results. It’s not about doing the most—it’s about giving your body what actually works for you.
Can Anyone Do Cupping or Are There Situations Where It’s Not Recommended?
Cupping is safe for most people, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all treatment. We’ll always start by checking in about your health, goals, and any current conditions before we get started.
If you’re on blood thinners, have sensitive skin, or are dealing with certain medical conditions, we may recommend waiting or using a gentler approach. That’s why your massage therapist will always do a proper intake before your session. It’s about meeting you where you are—not pushing you into something that doesn’t feel right.
